Sunshine House

paul“This is just making people realise how valuable their own lives are,” Stephen Armstrong

Sunshine House Community Centre is the home of Wigan Pier Workshops. The volunteer lead centre relaunched in 2006 with the aim of improving the quality of life for Wigan residents by providing opportunities to create.

Located in the heart of Scholes, yards away from where George Orwell stayed on his road to Wigan Pier, the centre is a warm hub of activity. They open their doors for the needs and wants of the residents; running Community Away Days, Friday Friendship Club, Sunshine Ladies Dance, as well as hosting several training courses. 2017 saw the opening of Sunshine Anex, an entirely new building to expand their activities into.

Sunshine House thrives on creativity. Their annual Art Exhibition is particularly popular attracting more than 200 visitors over the four day run. The work on the walls comes from weekly art classes for old and young using water colour, acrylic, charcoal, dry media, manga and cartoon book illustration.

Scholes loves to party. The community centre plays host to concerts, summer fairs and lots more events to welcome local people and guests. Meanwhile on a quiet day there’s lunch club now offering a three course meal with a mug of tea for just £4.50.
